Even the most accomplished city-slicker can enjoy camping with these camping tips and tricks! Whitford Insurance Network has done the research for you. Avoid bugs, injuries and a whole host of camping related disasters with these helpful tips.
  1. All food should be packed in waterproof containers and kept in an insulated cooler. Raw and cooked foods should be kept in separate coolers to prevent contamination. Care should be taken to insure foods are cooked to their proper temperatures, chilling promptly after.
  2. Dispose of or store any trash, particularly left over food, as directed by your campground.
  3. Hands and surfaces should be washed often, use hand sanitizer if water is not available.
  4. While enjoying outdoor activities take all proper safety measures, such as use of life vests and helmets.
  5. Make sure that all parties have brought the appropriate footwear and that no one hikes or swims alone.
  6. Only hike on posted trails to avoid injury.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the poison plants of the region and make sure everyone knows what sort of hazardous wildlife populates the area.
  8. Never, ever store food in your tent.
  9. Pack warm bedding and enough clothing. At night, using a fuel burning heat sources in a tent can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
  10. Apply insect repellant containing DEET to exposed skin to fight exposure to insect borne diseases. Check for ticks daily, especially after hiking or fishing near a wooded area.
  11. Long pants and sleeves helps prevent mosquito bites. Light colored clothing make spotting ticks easier.
  12. Outsmart mosquitos by facing your tent door into the wind; they will hide on the down-wind side to avoid the breeze instead of following you inside your tent!
  13. Use a plastic ground cloth under your tent to keep you dry at night and help avoid getting too cold.
  14. Be Sun Smart! Stay hydrated and rest often in shady areas to prevent dehydration during the day. Sunscreen should be applied every three to four hours, more frequently if you are engaging in vigorous activity or swimming.
  15. If swimming be careful to avoid drinking the water, which can cause upset stomach and lead to dehydration. Avoid swimming entirely if you've had an upset stomach in the last 24-36 hours.
  16. Be sure to bring a supply kit that contains First Aid supplies, a loud whistle, utility knife, a compass or GPS (make sure this is charged or has extra batteries!!), flashlight, blankets, batteries, non-perishable food, bottled water, clothes & medications. Bring this bag along on any excursions.
  17. Make sure a friend or family member at home knows where you are going and when you plan to return.
  18. Report any suspicious behavior or security concerns to campsite officials. This includes animals! Erratically behaving wildlife can be dangerous to other guests or may carry disease.
  19. Do not approach wildlife for any reason.
