Before your favorite artist walks on stage, they have a list of requirements that must be met by the venue in order to guarantee their performance. Your insurance company is very similar, an insured has to provide them with certain information in order to guarantee coverage. Some things are more important than others, but we've come up with a general list of things to keep in mind. As your life changes, so do your coverage needs, so it's important to keep your agent abreast of any updates or developments in order to avoid further crisis in the event of a claim.
- Animals: Many carriers have animal restrictions, this could be a list of unacceptable dog breeds, or it could be restrictions on the kinds of animals allowed on your property. Your agent needs to know the breed and bite history of any pets, and if there are any farm type animals on the premises.
- Other Structures: Do you have a heated shed on the property where someone has a workshop? Do you have a building used to store excess materials for your job? Your agent should be aware of the presence of other structures and what they're used for.
- Recreational Vehicles: Do you have a sailboat? A dune buggy? Your agent can't provide advice for coverage they're unaware you need.
- Finished Basements: Is there just drywall and carpeting, or has your family customized the basement into an additional living space?
- Amenities: Do you have a pool? A master bathroom with a spa tub or a steam shower? Have you recently upgraded your kitchen countertops, or remodeled a bathroom? Your coverage needs to be adjusted to reflect these additional home features.
- Business Use of Your Property: Does your child deliver pizzas? Do you give piano lessons at home? Do you sell Mary Kay, Longaberger Baskets, or have an Etsy store? Your agent needs to know these things to avoid a gap in coverage.
- Your children: Does your child have their own business, like dog walking? Are they a full time student or studying part time? Do they have a car with them away at college? This information can help us make sure you have all the discounts available, and that they won't have any gaps in their coverage while they're away at school.
- Additional Locations: Do you have any storage units or inherited properties? Does your child leave some of their belongings at school through the summer? Your agent needs to know so they can extend liability or coverage, as necessary.
- Sharing Economy: Are you an Air-BnB host or Uber driver? Some carriers exclude coverage, so it's important to discuss this with your agent to avoid any unpleasant surprises in the event of a claim.
- Personal Activities: Are you on the board of governors at your golf course? Do you head the PTA at your child's school? The more information you provide, the better your agent can help you guard your assets against a suit or claim.
