May is Motorcycle Awareness Month
Sharing the Road with Motorcycles
Motorists often neglect to consider the increased number of motorcycles on the road in the warmer months. 75% of all motorcycle accidents involve a collision with another vehicle; two-thirds of those accidents are caused by motorists not respecting a motorcycles right of way.   Failing to detect and recognize motorcycles or motorcyclists is the main cause of motorcycle accidents. These accidents are often entirely avoidable and can have devastating repercussions for both parties. An at fault accident involving a motorcyclist can quickly climb to a multi-million dollar settlement when one considers medical treatments and the possibility of permanent disability or mortality. Greater caution when navigating intersections and maintaining a larger following distance are two great ways to help everyone have a safe, happy bike season! Remember to pay particular attention during wet weather, especially when driving under covered roadways where a cyclist may have sought shelter. Finally, if there's a cyclist in your life, consider asking them to add a strip of reflective tape to their helmet and jacket, and insist they check their signals and brake lights prior to each ride.
